Greenwood Village, CO – September 29, 2011 — Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company (Great-West) has appointed James Van Harmelen as senior vice president and corporate controller, it was announced today by Mitchell Graye, president and CEO. Van Harmelen, who reports to Graye, will direct corporate financial accounting and reporting activities to ensure compliance with all internal and external requirements. He also will oversee corporate and subsidiary financial standards, accounting policies and procedures, and will be involved in strategic planning.
Most recently, Van Harmelen was vice president and controller for international operations at MetLife. Previously, he held senior finance positions in the United States and internationally at American International Assurance Company, New York Life and Sun Life Financial.
"Jim's extensive global finance experience positions him well to lead the development of our annual operating plan so that it supports the initiatives of the company and serves as a playbook for the growth of the business," Graye said. "He has the ideal skill set to provide financial and business decision leadership support for both our ongoing businesses and the development of new opportunities."
Van Harmelen earned an honors bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and he is a Chartered Accountant from Canada.
